Question by _Marty_: Which is better single-sex/mixed-sex halls in university?

HI all,

off to uni soon, just wondering is it better to be in single-sex/mixed-sex halls of residence for uni.
I mean what would be the difference in atmosphere between a male only and a mixed?

Last year I was on an all-girls hall in a co-ed building, in which floors one and three were reserved for guys, and floors two and four for girls. One of the nice features of being sort of separated from the guys was that I didn't have to worry so much about modesty when I'd walk from my room to the showers across the hall in only a towel with my shower things (we all did that). If there'd been guys living there, it might've been a little bit awkward. There were also a lot of gender-specific bonding activities and my hall became very sisterly. In contrast, I spent a lot of my free time on an all-guys hall that housed a lot of my friends. This was quite...educational. The guys were very much themselves. They talked about whatever subject they wanted, occasionally forgetting I was there and perhaps going too far into the realms of "inappropriate" (haha). They were very relaxed together and brotherly, more so than my hall was sisterly. They could often be found playing video games or watching a movie together in the lounge. There was less drama on the all-guys hall than there was on my hall, or at least less petty drama.

This year, I'm on a mixed-gender hall, incidentally, with many guys from the hall where I spent a lot of time last year. My hall is divided by wing, but one side of the dormitory is smaller than the other, so on my side, the girls' side, there are only five girls, whereas on the guys' side, I think there are twelve guys. The atmosphere is overall pretty relaxed and, perhaps because it is male-dominated (number-wise), it's a lot more like their hall from last year than it is like my all-girls hall. I feel like for first year students, there's a lot more pressure to act a certain way when on a mixed hall -- like, there's a constant reminder in one's head not to embarrass oneself around those constantly present members of the opposite sex. As a sophomore, I'm kinda past that, but I saw that being the case with many of the freshmen who lived on mix-gendered halls.

Also, keep in mind that if you live on a mix-gendered hall and end up dating one of your hallmates, drama most likely will ensue if the relationship doesn't last. You have to be extremely careful about dating on your hall.... Even though a relationship has ended, both still have to live on the hall for the rest of the year. Just be careful!

I feel like, in general, single-gendered halls are more relaxed (privacy-wise, relate-ability-wise, and comfort-wise), especially for first-year students, but I'm really happy with my decision to be on a mixed hall this year.
